Halifax in hunt for dormant account owners

Jill Treanor
Tuesday February 20, 2007
The Guardian

Halifax is urging customers to step forward and claim the 44m held in 110,000 savings and bank accounts that have not been touched for 15 years.
The bank launched its campaign to reunite customers with forgotten money ahead of a drive by the Treasury to use money in these so-called dormant accounts for charitable causes.

The Treasury wants banks to pour the millions of pounds it believes sits unused in such accounts into a central pool that can then be distributed to charities supporting youth causes and financial literacy. However, it needs legislation to enable this to happen which suggests any removal of dormant accounts from the banks could be at least a year away

You never know someone we know is sitting out there and has forgotten about their account.

Good luck everyone! it might be you...

Tamadus has disabled reputation

I urge anyone who suspects they may have a dormant account to claim the money back asap.

This plan by the treasury is nothing short of legalised robbery, and should be opposed.

( snigger snigger at the thought of all of you out there who opened credit card accounts with the original leeds building society all that time ago and the probability of finding these agreements tending to zero )

The British Bankers Assosciation

This link to the BBA offers an online form to complete, with as much detail (previous addresses etc) as you can remember, then approx 4-6 weeks later, you'll get a response from them indicating which banks hold records on you.
I've done it - and it revealed an account held with Lloyds, closed in 1988!
Who said they only hold 6 years of info!

I also received a letter from Lloyds to confirm account numbers etc.

Give it a try! May even be worth stickying this as a public link?
