Looking at a car for my son this week. He was going to buy this one (http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VAUXHALL+ASTRA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-9-4294966635-4294966969/advert.action?R=200809304785488&distance=13&postcode=HX3+9RL&channel=CARS&make=VAUXHALL&model=ASTRA&min_pr=1000&max_pr=&max_mileage=)

However before "doing the deal" I advised my son to do HPI check (5.00 through RAC) and it brought up some alarming details.

Category C insurance write off, and a dodgy mileage history.

I did consider informing crime stoppers, but there is no proof that any crime is contemplated.

I did decide to inform Autotrader and sent them an email

I think you should be aware of this vehicle

This vehicle is a cat D write off, and has an odd mileage history.

Their reply

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Thank you for letting us know. The seller is not legally obliged to provide that information in then ad. We would encourage all buyers to check a vehicle's history before purchasing.
If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,

I think as a responsible company they really should take heed of warnings such as this. It is not practical for them to vet every new advert, but when one is pointed out, well.

The reason they aren't interested is because if they banned every dodgy seller they would run out of customers post haste

Not so. I have sold the odd car on Autotrader. I don't "think" I am dodgy.

So have I but the operative word is 'odd' .An awful lot are dealers who don't admit as much

I must admit that as a seller, I have sold on Autotrader before (and had some very strange phone calls as a result!). As a buyer, I would never buy from a dealer whose details I couldn't check thoroughly beforehand and I would never go to a private seller.

I know the guy from Torbay who founded AutoTrader & he was a bit of a lad

I'll bet he is worth a few bob Lefty.

06-03-2008, 06:24 PM
He sold it when it covered only the immediate South West but yes he still got a few bob part of which he invested in buying the old Harris's Sausage factory in Totnes after it closed which I understand he turned into luxury apartments

Before the Trader he was supplying free calendars to the pubs, clubs & shops which had paid adverts around the outside
